Electra Battery Materials Corporation's Electra Cobalt Sulfate Refinery (Ontario) in Canada, Ontario (Cobalt/Temiskaming area) has an economic study outlining initial capital of $73M.

Electra Battery Materials Corporation's Electra Cobalt Sulfate Refinery (Ontario) has reported economic study results for the cobalt project in Canada, Ontario (Cobalt/Temiskaming area). It reflects Electra Battery Materials Corporation's (ELBM.V) latest disclosed economics for the asset.

Economics. Initial capital expenditure is estimated at $73M. Economics are based on US$5.00/lb gross conversion margin on toll portion (largely independent of cobalt price); market-facing 40% illustrated at current US$7.00/lb hydroxide-to-sulfate spread.

Production and mine plan. The project envisions a refinery (hydrometallurgical cobalt sulfate) operation. Average annual production is approximately 5120 t Co/y.

Resources and ownership. The company holds a 100% interest in the project. Royalties and streams: LG Energy Solution tolling framework for 60% of production over first six years; Glencore agreement securing 100% feedstock through 2027; WMC inventory financing/agency; US DoW US$20M, Canada C$20M and Ontario C$17.5M government support.

These figures are extracted from Electra Battery Materials Corporation's technical disclosures and reflect the most recent disclosure on file. Study price assumption
US$5.00/lb gross conversion margin on toll portion (largely independent of cobalt price); market-facing 40% illustrated at current US$7.00/lb hydroxide-to-sulfate spread

A US$73M build against a US$52M market capitalisation is the fact that governs this asset. The company cannot fund this from its own balance sheet, and it cannot raise the difference quietly: any equity solution at these levels is transformative for existing holders, and any debt solution requires a counterparty willing to underwrite a single-asset construction risk at roughly one and a half times the borrower's equity value. That is a narrow field of potential financiers, and the terms they extract, whether in dilution, offtake control or security, will determine what the current shareholder actually owns when the plant is running.

The economics support the case without settling it. The tolling structure is the interesting part: a US$5.00/lb gross conversion margin on the toll portion is largely insulated from the cobalt price, which makes the cash flow more bankable than a pure price-taker's, and the study illustrates a market-facing 40% at a US$7.00/lb hydroxide-to-sulfate spread. Treat that second leg as a sensitivity, not a base case, because it is the piece exposed to a spread the company does not control. The headline return should be read with that split in mind.

Ontario's Cobalt/Temiskaming area is a genuine positive: a stable, mining-literate jurisdiction with established permitting norms and a credible skilled workforce, which lowers execution risk on a construction-stage build. But jurisdiction does not solve a funding gap. Note also that this is one of nine projects the company tracks, so management attention and capital are both contested internally. The question that decides this investment is not the IRR. It is who writes the US$73M cheque, on what terms, and how much of the company is left for today's holders afterwards.
